Boyolali, C. Java, ANTARA JATENG - Indonesia`s low-cost carrier Lion Air has opened a new route from Solo to Kuala Lumpur, President Director of the Lion Air Group Edward Sirait stated.

The new route from the Adi Soemarmo International Airport in Solo, Central Java, will add to Lion Air`s network, and Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi had declared it as a connecting airport in October 2016, Edward noted here, Wednesday.

Lion Air`s first flight took off from the Adi Soemarmo airport to Kuala Lumpur at 10:40 a.m. local time on Wednesday. The carrier`s first flight from Kuala Lumpur departed at 2:50 p.m. Western Indonesia Standard Time (WIB) and was scheduled to arrive in Solo at 4:10 (WIB). time.

Edward remarked that the new route will facilitate passengers from Solo to make their international traveling easier while increasing the number of foreign tourists visiting through the airport.

Passengers from Solo can continue their flight from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Australia, Taiwan, Vietnam, China, and India. Similarly, passengers from these countries can visit Indonesia, with Solo as their entry gate.

Meanwhile, Lion Air`s Director of Safety and Security Daniel Putut Kuncoro Adi stated that the opening of the new route is expected to increase foreign tourist arrivals in Indonesia.

"Tourists from India and Solo share several similarities, with their temples and other arts and cultures," he pointed out.

General Manager of the Adi Soemarmo Airport Abdullah Usman remarked that with the opening of the new route, the airport now has to serve 64 routes every day.

Another low-cost carrier AirAsia is already serving the same route, but it only offers flights thrice a week on that route, on every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.

Lion Air will start daily flights, Usman noted.

He expressed hope that the opening of the new route would increase tourist arrivals in Solo from Kuala Lumpur.

During the last two months, the passenger occupancy rate on the Solo-Kuala Lumpur route has increased by eight percent, from 80 to 90 per day on an average.
