At the ceremony held at the Agribusiness Sub-Terminal in the sub-district of Larangan, President Jokowi, as he is also called, said the program will bring synergy among a number of government agencies, including district and provincial governments, ministries, financial and banking institutions in the country.

"So far, ministries have their own poverty alleviation programs which serve the same purpose but it seems these were being carried out without any synergy. This must not happen anymore," he said.

The President said he believed the Synergy Action for People's Economy program would be able to alleviate poverty and narrow the economic gap.

Through this program, he said, the issue of poverty would be tackled through a multi-dimensional approach, including urging the farmers and fishermen to have land certificates, let them have easier access to bank credit and helping them avail the benefit of digital products.

President Jokowi said Breber would be pursued as a pilot project for the implementation of the poverty alleviation program.

"If this turns out to be successful, it will be carried out across various regions in Indonesia. Later, I will check its implementation periodically. We have known about the problems in Brebes for years," he said.

He said among the problems faced by those in the agricultural sector, are availability of fertilizer which is expensive, means of production and difficulties faced by small and medium business owners to access capital.

"Now the interest on smallholder's credit is only nine percent, which makes it possible for farmers not having to seek funds from loan sharks anymore," he said. ***4***
