Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Police (Polri) handled at least 445 human trafficking cases and rescued 2,027 trafficking victims in June and July 2023, a senior police officer said.
The Jakarta Metropolitan Police contributed to the National Police's achievement, Deputy Chief of Jakarta Police Brig.Gen.Suyudi Ario Seto said during a seminar on law here on Tuesday.
Jakarta Police handled 12 of the 445 human trafficking cases, arrested 14 suspects, and rescued 55 of the 2,027 victims, he informed.
According to Seto, trafficking in persons is a crime that does not only violate human rights, but also disrespects human dignity.
Therefore, human trafficking is a serious problem, and Indonesia is committed to protecting its migrant workers from traffickers, he said.
Seto highlighted the importance of Indonesian migrant workers as significant contributors to the state's income through remittances, who are vulnerable to falling victim to traffickers.
"In this regard, the state has mandated the National Police to lead the handling of human trafficking cases," he said.
The Jakarta Metropolitan Police is undoubtedly committed to continuing efforts to crack down on perpetrators and uncover human trafficking networks, he said.
The seminar hopefully helped participants learn about the newest modus operandi as well as technical and tactical skills of mapping human trafficking networks to enable the proper handling of such cases, he added.
